Cutworm, oil-based printing ink on mulberry paper, 14” x 10”

woodblock prints

Cutworm

This image has been created based on electron microscope images of the transformation of a caterpillar into a butterfly. The form on the right is in the caterpillar stage; the left side shows the metamorphic process underway. The process is orchestrated by cells called “imaginal discs”—as if indebted to Disney. These cells digest the body, rebuild it, raise it to a sudden flamboyance of flight. This kind of print is sometimes called a “suicide print,” because the layering cuts come in sequence. Here the red field is largest area, then more is cut from the block to produce the black overlay, which tries to develop, articulate, clarify the image. It takes a series of efforts to get the image right; you start with more prints. Even so, sometimes you elaborate too much, remove too much of the image, and don’t get the result needed.
