woodblock prints
Giusti Garden, Verona: four block print
On the same subject as the previous print, this print is larger and more complex with four blocks registered and printed on top of one another by hand. The printing is monochromatic in white, gray, and black ink. The most figurative, elaborately carved block is the same as the previous edition, printed last on top of the other blocks.
Goethe visited Giusti Garden in 1786, marveling at the magical vertical scale of the cypress trees and likening them to the stitching awls of a shoemaker. Their fastigiate forms, closely ranked over hundreds of feet, do stitch, and stitch again a dramatic series of spatial relationships for the viewer who explores the gardens.
